Midseason Review: Hartford Athletic Still Searching for Answers as 2024 Rebuild Continues

In the summer of 1971, Hubert Vogelsinger scored a spectacular goal during a night game at Dillon Stadium, playing for New Haven City against the Hartford Greeks. He was 30 yards from the goal when a very high ball landed on his right foot. He volleyed the ball into a wall of Greek players. The ball went high into the air and onto his left foot. He volleyed the ball again, but this time the ball hit the crossbar and the ball went high into the air and onto his right foot. Hubert then volleyed the ball into the upper right corner of the goal, giving the keeper no chance. The ball did not touch the ground for the entire sequence. The fans, mostly Greeks, were amazed.

I doubt very much that any player, even the top pros, past or present, could have done what Hubert did. It required a thorough knowledge of how to kick a ball, practice and an amazing ability to concentrate on each stroke, especially using both the left and right foot.

I was right behind him when this happened. Rick Sewall
