CrowdStrike outage at Florida airports: Check flight status

Delays and cancellations continued Saturday after a global outage by cybersecurity service CrowdStrike disrupted airports, banks, hospitals and other businesses around the world.

The US cybersecurity company reported that an update contained a defect that affected Microsoft’s Windows operating system.

While most Florida airports reported they were back to normal, airlines are still reporting problems. Flight tracking service FlightAware reported more than 2,500 delays and more than 1,000 cancellations of U.S. flights on Saturday.

Delta posted on social media Saturday morning that it was continuing its “operational recovery” following Friday’s outage. “A travel waiver is still in effect for those impacted,” the airline posted on the site formerly known as Twitter.

United also said Friday night that some flights could still be delayed or canceled. It also informed passengers about its travel waiver, which allows travelers to change their flight or connecting city if necessary.

Orlando International Airport reported Friday that it experienced “limited impacts from the global technology outage that affected the information technology systems of several U.S. airlines.”

The most recent update from MCO came around 1:30 p.m. on Friday with the message that “delays/cancellations may continue and we kindly ask all travelers to contact their airline for the latest updates.”

On Friday, MCO advised travelers to:

  • Please check with their airlines for the latest flight information
  • Please allow extra time for check-in and baggage handling
  • Please keep an eye on the airport’s website and social media for updates

Fort Lauderdale Airport

Fort Lauderdale International Airport has posted updates from airlines through Friday afternoon stating operations returned to normalFLL advises travelers to check with their airline regarding the status of their flight.

Miami Airport

Miami International Airport’s website reported that the global outage was causing delays at the airport, but the page with more information was unavailable Saturday morning. MIA feed for social media urged passengers to contact their airline for flight status updates.

Tampa Airport

Tampa International Airport sent out an update Friday morning that the flight was operating fully resumedTPA encourages passengers to inquire directly with their airline regarding the status of their flight.

Jacksonville International Airport said passengers may experience longer lines, delays and possible cancellations as the airport and airlines work to resume normal operations. JAX last posted an update on social media on Friday morning, urging passengers to check with their airline for flight updates.

Several flights were cancelled on Friday and one flight was delayed by three hours on Friday morning.

Sarasota Bradenton International Airport reported 11 canceled flights and 17 delays Friday morning, according to SRQ spokesperson Emma Klostermeyer.

Sanford Airport

Orlando Sanford International Airport said Friday that flights to and from SFB may be delayed or canceled due to technical issues. It asked passengers to contact Allegiant Airlines directly for flight status updates.
