Seven Spokane, Washington, police officers and a police dog were hospitalized Friday for injuries they sustained when their vehicles collided with a suspect vehicle during a high-speed chase.

According to police, all those involved in the accident, including the three arrested suspects, are expected to recover from their injuries.

A SWAT team and a K-9 officer were searching for a suspect with an arrest warrant around 1 p.m. Friday when the police dog spotted a suspicious vehicle from a recent drive-by shooting, according to a report posted by Sgt. Teresa Fuller, Spokane Police Department liaison officer.

The K9 officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the vehicle fled and – due to the seriousness of the original crime – officers pursued it, police said.

During the pursuit, an assisting armored police vehicle collided with the suspect vehicle at the intersection of Oak and Carlisle streets in a residential area in west Spokane. The vehicle carrying the K-9 officer chasing the suspect car then also collided with the suspect car, police said.

High-speed chase left civilian with minor injuries, lasted just 2 minutes

According to police, the crash could have been even worse because a civilian car stopped when it saw the armored vehicle approaching with flashing lights and sirens and narrowly escaped the collision.

Three suspects were taken into custody and transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The police officers were also transported to the hospital after securing the scene, while the K-9 officer was taken to a local veterinarian, police said.

Officers were treated for “various injuries related to the crash,” Spokane Police Interim Chief Justin Lundgren said during a news conference after the incident, which was posted on YouTube by Spokane TV station KREM.

The chase lasted about two minutes and occurred “at a high rate of speed, particularly just prior to the collision,” said Lundgren, who declined to say which drive-by shooting incident the suspects were arrested for.

“This particular incident highlights the challenges our patrol officers face every day with the number of shootings they investigate and the behavior of the suspects, not only during the commission of these violent crimes, but also the great lengths they go to to escape,” Lundgren said in a statement. “It puts the community at risk.”
