Honolulu Civil Beat seeks a business reporter

Honolulu Civil Beat is seeking an experienced business reporter/writer to explore the intersection of government and business in Hawaii and the Pacific in an innovative way.

We are working on a $10 billion commuter rail project.

We are at the forefront when it comes to renewable energy.

The University of Hawaii is one of the state’s largest employers and a major economic engine.

This includes the military and the defense industry, as well as state governments, the federal government, and the city of Honolulu.

Public and private unions are political power brokers.

We are seeking a writer who can examine how some of Hawaii’s key institutions contribute to the state’s economic well-being, and what efforts they are making in research, innovation, and technology.

Workplace issues and the role of nonprofits in Hawaii’s business community are also part of this new approach.

This is primarily an entrepreneurial and investigative position that requires excellent news assessment, sharp writing skills, and analytical abilities.

This is a new role for us and the successful candidate will play a major role in shaping it.

Interest in and the ability to collaborate with other business writers and reporters is essential.

Qualifications This position is based in Honolulu and we are looking for a reporter with a minimum of 5 years of experience in corporate, economic and financial reporting.

Knowledge of data journalism and knowledge of Hawaii, its culture and the issues that exist there, are an advantage.

Be detail-oriented and demonstrate the ability to efficiently multitask in a deadline-driven environment. Demonstrate excellent reporting and writing skills to accurately produce content for our websites and publications. You will be able to develop resources and tools, generate story ideas, and meet deadlines to create content, with an emphasis on balanced reporting and high ethical standards.
