Las Vegas ranks 52nd on the list of 100 safest cities to drive

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — The safest drivers are in Hawaii, the worst are in New Mexico, and Las Vegas ranks right in the middle of Allstate’s report on the best drivers.

The 16th Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report looked at three criteria: hard braking, high speed and cell phone use.

Las Vegas ranks 52nd overall; 75th for hard braking; 76th for safe driving; and 5th for using a phone while driving.

Honolulu drivers ranked first for safest drivers, followed by Minneapolis, Seattle, Portland, Oregon, and Virginia Beach.

The five least safe drivers:

1. Albuquerque, New Zealand
2. Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
3. Murrieta/Temecula/Menifee, California.
4. Fresno, California.
5. Stockton, California.

For the first time in the report, Allstate used anonymized connected driving data to determine the rankings.

Allstate’s data shows trends based on region.

Las Vegas ranked fifth for drivers holding their phones the least. Other Western cities were in the top 10 in this category, including San Jose, California, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, San Bernardino and Portland, Oregon.

In the Midwest, drivers brake the least. “Madison, Cleveland, Des Moines, Minneapolis and St. Louis make up half of the top 10 areas that avoid slowing down more than 7 mph per second,” Allstate said in its report.

Drivers in the Northwest and Northeast drive slower than the rest of the country. Seattle, Spokane, Wash., Portland, Ore. in the Northwest, and Buffalo, N.Y., Albany, N.Y., Rochester, N.Y., and Allentown, Pa. all ranked in the top 10 for driving at safer speeds.
