Balloon Release and Candlelight Vigil in Honor of Topeka Women

TOPEKA (KSNT) – A candlelight vigil and balloon release were held Saturday, July 20, for a Topeka woman who died after a domestic violence incident.

Dedra L. Simmons died on Friday, July 19. It was the tenth murder in Topeka this year.


The service was organized by her friends and family, who said many words and prayers to celebrate her life.

The community was encouraged to wear purple, as a tribute to domestic violence awareness.

Family and friends left burning candles on the corner of the 1300 Block of SW Western Ave.
