Village Awards honors individuals and companies who have invested money in It Takes a Village over the years

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – The second annual Village Awards honored the individuals and companies who have helped It Takes a Village with its mission, programs and productions since its founding 12 years ago.

Steven Massey, founder and director of It Takes a Village, says his program wouldn’t be where it is today without the incredible support of community members over the years.

The black tie event included a dinner and special performances by the dancers of It Takes a Village, who of course presented all the awards.

City Councilmember Karen Hiller was named the winner of the Spotlight Award for her continued support of the organization and attendance at their performances.

Massey emphasizes the importance of connecting the students he teaches with those who proudly support them.

“They actually give to It Takes a Village, and It Takes a Village is an after-school youth performing arts center,” Massey explained. “I want them to be able to see where their money is going, what they’re supporting. I want the kids to be able to see up close some of the people who help us do what we do.”

This year’s full list of winners includes:

Youth Award – TaNya Webster

Young Adult Award – Ajanea Gunby

Faith Prize – New Hope and Love Community Church

Spotlight Award – Karen Hiller

Community Action Award – Omni Circle Group

Stellar Prize – Carole Williams

Angel Award – Linessa Frazier
