Baby howler monkey brings joy to Alabama zoo

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (CBS, KYMA/KECY) – The Birmingham Zoo in Alabama was in turmoil when a baby howler monkey, born June 6, began climbing over its mother and exploring her habitat.

Parents Matea and Monte welcomed their newest addition, whose gender is not yet known, to their growing family, which now includes two sisters, Miko, three, and Myla, one and a half, the zoo said.

The zoo told Storyful that a naming contest will take place once the gender is known.

This latest addition is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan, which aims to maintain healthy populations, the zoo said.
