10 Worst NFL Teams Entering Training Camp, Including the Los Angeles Chargers

The Carolina Panthers have had to rebuild from the ground up this offseason. Bryce Young, the 2023 No. 1 overall pick that Carolina overpaid to acquire, is the only real building block left standing. Fortunately, the Panthers’ quarterback has more help on offense this time around with play-caller Dave Canales, an improved offensive line, and the additions of Diontae Johnson and Xavier Legette. Unfortunately, this is still a bottom-10 offense, and when combined with arguably the worst defense in football, the Panthers will be one of the worst teams in the NFL in 2024.

We’ll start with the good news for the New England Patriots, and there’s a lot of it. Jerod Mayo will ensure this defense maintains its excellence, which should translate into another top-10 unit this season. There’s even more excitement surrounding quarterback Drake Maye, who rightfully has MVP-like physical attributes that just need to be fleshed out. Those will be the bright spots for New England in 2024, and there will be plenty of fun moments. However, the lack of a supporting cast around Maye and early starter Jacoby Brissett will be the anchor that drags this offense down. The future looks very bright for the Patriots, at least.

We’re still a little puzzled as to why Sean Payton took this job with the Denver Broncos. He spent the 2023 season with Sean Payton, a quarterback he clearly wanted nothing to do with from the start. Now, the Broncos’ roster is rather bare after a series of salary cap casualties just so the team could bite the financial bullet and fire Russell Wilson. Payton now enters his second season in Denver with a rookie quarterback who has limited physical tools to lead an offense with mediocre weapons around him.

While we believe the Arizona Cardinals will be one of the worst teams in the NFL in 2024, there’s also confidence that this will be an entertaining club. Kyler Murray showed flashes of his MVP-like ceiling in the latter part of the 2023 NFL season, and now he has a potential All-Pro prospect in Marvin Harrison Jr. Murray in Drew Petzing’s offense – a 2025 NFL head coaching candidate – combined with MHJ, James Conner, Trey McBride, Michael Wilson and Trey Benson is a recipe for highlight-reel action. Plus, with Arizona’s defense still in disrepair, Murray and company will have to put a lot of points on the board.

Admittedly, we weren’t the biggest fans of the Washington Commanders’ offseason moves. Dan Quinn was the backup plan at head coach, and while he has a history of success, it came with a lot of talent on the roster. Washington doesn’t have that kind of quality of roster, especially defensively. Meanwhile, Jayden Daniels is now thrust into a situation where he has to start behind arguably the worst offensive line in the NFL. For a quarterback whose decision-making has been called into question under pressure and whose durability is an even bigger concern, the circumstances in Washington don’t inspire confidence.

Fortunately for Daniel Jones, the New York Giants spent much of their offseason improving the talent around him. Now healthy, Jones should have a better offensive line and receiving corps to improve his game in 2024. That said, Jones’ ceiling isn’t very high and the best-case scenario would be for the Giants offense to still be average this fall. We love the Giants’ front seven and expect it to cause chaos at times, but New York’s secondary will prevent this defense from reaching its true potential.

A quarterback room of Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew is a key ingredient for one of the worst teams in the NFL. We like the Las Vegas Raiders coaching staff, and this defense will be even better than many expect. However, O’Connell seemed destined to be a career backup last season and Minshew’s success has largely been driven by an elite play-caller backing him up. We do expect the Raiders defense to keep games close, but both O’Connell and Minshew will repeatedly let this team down in games, especially in clutch situations.

It’s another year where the New Orleans Saints continue to push their disastrous salary cap woes further into the future. Of course, as the Saints do this, their roster will be thinned. New Orleans now has the worst offensive line in the NFL, and quarterback Derek Carr is one of the league’s worst quarterbacks under pressure. A below-average offense combined with a fringe top-15 defense from New Orleans will put the Saints on a path to being one of the NFL’s worst teams this fall.

The fact that the Seattle Seahawks are among the worst teams in the NFL this fall speaks volumes about the improvements that have been made across the league. We love first-year head coach Mike Macdonald and have faith that he can eventually turn a young Seahawks defense into a top-tier unit. But dramatic changes take much more than one season. We have far more faith in the Seahawks offense. Unfortunately for Seattle, a tough schedule and some offensive line issues combined with an inexperienced defense will leave them well short of a winning record.
