WASHINGTON (CBS, KYMA/KECY) — Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN) spoke with Margaret Brennan on Face the Nation on Sunday about calls for President Joe Biden to drop out of the presidential race.

Phillips said: “It’s time to step aside and turn this over to a new generation. My support will continue until he makes that decision. I encourage that. The country encourages that and he has a chance to be an American hero.”

During the interview, Brennan and Phillips discussed the future of the Democratic Party, with Brennan asking Phillips if he thinks Congress will “come under Republican control.” Phillips responded:

“I think so. And I think that’s one of the reasons we’re seeing this huge shift now, it’s in my colleagues’ backyard. They’re seeing their numbers plummet, our frontliners from the most important districts in the country. And to get back to your point, I won a district that hadn’t voted Democrat in 60 years. There are a few of us who know how to invite independents back, “never Trump Republicans.” Democrats have used imposition, not invitation. And I think my colleagues realize that, unfortunately, a man we love, Joe Biden, is going to bring this whole ticket down. This isn’t just about the White House. And if Democrats don’t keep the Senate or take back the House, I think it’s really problematic for this country and for the future. And the answer is absolutely and that’s a widespread sentiment, and it’s real.”
