Western US braces for extreme heat wave with record temperatures

A major heat wave is underway in the western United States, with temperatures expected to rise above 10 degrees Celsius.

From ReutersThe extreme weather will hit cities from Southern California to northern Idaho through midweek, with temperatures topping 43°C (110°F).

Nearly 30 million people in California, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho, Oregon and Washington are under heat warnings or extreme heat advisories.

In addition to the heat, central Oregon and parts of Washington are also at greater risk of wildfires due to hot and dry conditions.

The Lone Rock Fire in Oregon has burned more than 116,000 acres, and the Durkee Fire has prompted evacuations in eastern Oregon. Wildfires in Canada have also prompted evacuations.

Experts are linking the extreme heat to climate change and warning of health risks such as heat stroke.

Washington cities such as Yakima and Spokane are expected to break records, while Boise, Idaho, could tie its record of 107°F (42°C). Las Vegas could tie its record of 113°F (45°C), and Death Valley could top 120°F (49°C).

Although temperatures may drop after Monday, the heat in affected areas will still be significantly above average.
