Angels battle Oakland bullpen in final scheduled visit to Coliseum, beat A’s 8-5

OAKLAND, Calif. — Kevin Pillar hit a two-run double in the eighth inning as Los Angeles came back against the Oakland bullpen. The Angels defeated the Athletics 8-5 on Sunday in what will likely be their last game ever at the Coliseum.

Logan O’Hoppe singled to lead off the deciding inning. Pinch-hitter Nolan Schanuel had an RBI single and Jo Adell got a bases-loaded walk from Lucas Erceg (2-3) as the Angels rallied to snap a franchise-long eight-game losing streak at the Coliseum that dates back to early last season.

A crowd of 10,380 attended the Angels’ last scheduled trip to Oakland, where they won the AL West title in 2004 and 2005. After that, the A’s will move to Sacramento for at least the next three years in preparation for their planned move to Las Vegas, which they hope will start the 2028 season.

“There’s so much that’s happened in this place, I’m definitely going to miss it as someone who’s coached here, as someone who’s watched a lot of young players grow here and now as someone who came back and managed here,” said Ron Washington, the longtime A’s third base and infield coach who now manages the Angels. “The crowd is still the same, the people here still love the Oakland A’s and it’s just sad that things are about to change. Life happens.”

Luis García (4-1) pitched the eighth inning for the win, then Carlos Estévez made his 18th save.

The Angels have gone 193-260 at the Coliseum since the A’s moved to Oakland in 1968.

Miguel Andujar hit a go-ahead home run in the fifth inning for the A’s, who had rookie right-hander Joey Estes in strong position to win back-to-back starts for the first time this year. He struck out four and walked two, allowing two earned runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings to snap the A’s three-game winning streak.

JJ Bleday and Brent Rooker hit back-to-back RBI doubles with two outs in the third inning, while Lawrence Butler also doubled to get things started for the A’s.

The Angels got one run back with a sacrifice fly by Brandon Drury in the fourth inning, then tied the score with a homerun by Mickey Moniak in the fifth inning.

Andujar’s fourth home run of the year came off Angels right-hander Carson Fulmer, who passed the ball to Hunter Strickland.
