Sacramento Republic FC Press Release

In front of a national TV audience, Republic FC put on a dominant performance in a 5-2 victory over Oakland Roots SC on Sunday afternoon. Two goals from Kieran Phillips led the club to its highest-scoring game of the season and the biggest head-to-head win of any team in history. With the win, Sacramento moves away from Oakland for second place in the Western Conference standings, just three points behind New Mexico United.

Republic FC took an early lead and never looked back after Kieran Phillips made Oakland pay for a foul in the fourth minute. The striker intercepted a pass near midfield and drove the ball upfield, rounding two defenders before firing the ball past the keeper for his first goal since June 9.

A free kick led to Sacramento’s second goal of the afternoon after Oakland was fouled just outside the penalty area. Justin Portillo sent the set piece to the back post for Jared Timmer, who headed the ball across the goal for Shane Wiedt to emphatically find the net. It was the first score of the season for Wiedt, who passed the 10,000-minute mark in the regular season during the game.

Nick Ross and Cristian Parano added another goal just before half-time. Jack Gurr won possession in the defensive half and sent the ball down the right flank for Parano, and the Argentine carried the ball forward before laying it off for Nick Ross on the edge of the box. The three goals marked the club’s highest scoring half of the season.

On the other side of the break, Mark Briggs’ side picked up where they left off as Kieran Phillips netted his second goal of the afternoon. Jack Gurr sent in a cross from the right and the Roots defender mucked the clearance before the ball fell to Phillips for his second brace of the campaign.

Oakland pulled two goals back later in the half when Johnny Rodriguez found the net in the 55th and 71st minutes, before Republic FC’s Trevor Amann silenced the Roots fans with his ninth goal of the season in the 85th minute.

Republic FC has one more road trip ahead of them, as the club travels cross-country to take on Detroit City FC next Saturday. Kickoff from Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck, Michigan is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. PT and the game will be broadcast in English and Spanish on Antenna TV 40.2, and streamed on FOX40.com, via the FOX40 News mobile app and on ESPN+.
