Sport2-A-Days: Madison Prep Chargers

Baton Rouge – After finishing the 2023 season 8-4, the Madison Prep Chargers are looking to build on that and reach new heights in 2024.

Landry Williams returns for a sixth year as Madison Prep’s head coach and he says many players are returning on offense.

The Chargers have three-year starting quarterback Tylan Johnson back, as well as four offensive linemen described as the team’s “sandwiches.”

Also back is running back Alfred Mcknight. He may not have been in the starting lineup, but he played a lot last season and rushed for over 500 yards.

The Chargers’ defense, however, is thin on experience. They only have four starters on defense, and two of them are in the secondary. The defensive line and linebackers will have a lot of new things on their plate at the varsity level, but Coach Williams believes his program’s approach to coaching athletes and focusing on the small details will set them up for success.

Williams also values the bond within his team off the field, which will be evident on Friday nights.

“We’re really young on defense, so we’ve got to put a lot of emphasis on doing the little things and doing them well. I think the offense, overall, is going to have to carry us this year. They’re the guys that, you know, are more experienced. Those are the guys that have put in a lot of work. They have a good team vibe. They hang out with each other. They spend a lot of personal time with themselves, you know, so I have high expectations for those guys. They have a good sense of brotherhood, so I think that’s going to be the key for us moving forward this year,” Williams said.

Madison Prep opens the season on September 6 with an away game in Dutchtown.
