Historic church in Augusta celebrates 224th anniversary

AUGUSTA, Ga (WJBF)- Today it is a historic church in South Augusta celebrating its 224th anniversary.

The historic Spirit Creek Baptist Church was founded in July 1800 and is one of the oldest African-American Baptist churches in the country.

On Sunday, the church organized a major event to celebrate more than two centuries together.
There was a worship service with special speaker Reverend Dr. Charles Goodman of Tabernacle Baptist Church. There was also music, food and fellowship.

“A group of people who were enslaved in the 1800s, they came together under the direction and guidance of the Holy Spirit and the anointing of the Lord, and they formed this church on Butler Creek at that particular time. So we’ve been around ever since, 224 years today,” said Rev. Ellis Godbee Jr., the church’s pastor.

According to Pastor Godbee, the church is already starting to think about celebrating its 225th anniversary.
