WATCH: Video goes behind the scenes as Phoenix women prepare for the season

Wellington Phoenix offer an insight into their preparation for the Women’s National League, with a four-minute video showing their team training.

The video, shot by Dom Fransen, follows the coaching staff and reserve players at their training camp, the NZ Campus of Innovation and Sport, in Upper Hutt.

In the video, reserve coach Callum Holmes explains how the Phoenix academy is helping to develop the young women who are among the 10 teams competing in this year’s Women’s National League.

The video is about a team analysis session and the players doing drills.

How the Women’s National League Works

Last season’s National League expanded from eight participants to ten teams in 2022.

The additional teams were the Wellington Phoenix reserves and a third team from the North Island.

Last season Capital Football fielded hybrid federation/club teams, in partnership with Wellington United and Waterside Karori.

The 2024 competition will consist of:

  • Four teams qualify through the Lotto NRFL Women’s Premiership (Auckland United and West Coast Rangers have already qualified).
  • A team representing Central Football.
  • Two teams nominated by Capital Football.
  • Wellington Phoenix Reserve.
  • Canterbury United Pride, representing Milan Football.
  • Southern United, representing Southern Football.
