A total of three people were shot and Springfield Police officers were fired upon during a confrontation in the 2100 block of South 15th Street early Sunday morning.

Members of the Springfield Police Department’s Emergency Response Team and Crisis Response Team were called to the scene after several individuals failed to cooperate with officers and barricaded themselves inside a home.

A person shot at officers from inside the home at least twice, both times hitting a rescue vehicle carrying several Springfield Police officers.

Springfield police returned fire, said Deputy Police Chief Sara Pickford.

One person in the home suffered a gunshot wound, but Pickford could not confirm if the person was hit by gunfire from Springfield police.

Eventually, someone else from the house came out to tell police about the injured person who was there.

ERT members, accompanied by a trauma doctor assigned to the team, then entered the home. Police locked down everyone inside and provided medical attention to the injured person, who was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

When Springfield police arrived on the scene shortly after 1 a.m., they found two men with gunshot wounds on the same block. The two victims, who were also taken to the hospital, were able to verbally lead police to the house in question.

Pickford said she did not immediately know what the connection was between the two shooting victims and the people in the house.

Springfield police were on the scene for hours trying to “peacefully resolve the situation,” Pickford said.

Police were trying to determine what led up to the shooting, Pickford said.

They were originally alerted to the area by ShotSpotter, but there had been multiple callers about the shooting, she added.

No officers were injured during the confrontation.

Pickford did not say how many troops were on the scene.

The Illinois State Police were asked to launch an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
