What caused the Sydney train disaster?

Anand Runwal and one of his twin daughters were killed on Sunday, July 21, possibly by an unexpected gust of wind that caused the stroller to land on the tracks.

“It appears they took the lift down to the platform and briefly took their hands off the pram. It is possible that a gust of wind caused the pram to roll towards the track,” Detective Chief Inspector Paul Dunston, of St George’s Police Command, said, according to Sky News.

Runwal saw the train approaching and ran to stop it, standing between the approaching train and his daughters in a desperate attempt to save them.

“I knew right away it was bad. I heard a woman screaming for her life: ‘Please, please stop.’ The train couldn’t stop,” she recalls.

NSW Police rescued the two-year-old girl who was still alive and evacuated her safely.

She and her mother, Poonam Runwal, 39, were then taken to St George Hospital. Fortunately, both have since been discharged.
