Disney Genie+ name change rolls out this week

In June Disney announced an update to the Disney Genie+ system at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World. The switch happens this Wednesday, July 24, so the Disneyland app may look a bit different when you log on.

At Disneyland, the ONLY thing changing is what Disney calls the servicesStarting Wednesday, Disney Genie+ will become Lightning Lane Multi Pass, and Individual Lightning Lane will be renamed Lighning Lane Single Pass. That’s it – there are no new features or benefits. As noted in the Disney Parks Blog, “the way guests purchase, select and redeem Lightning Lane passes at Disneyland Resort will remain the same. ”

Disney is changing the name of the Disney Genie+ service this week, but otherwise there are no improvements for Disneyland visitors.

This means you still can’t use the app to select Lightning Lane Multi Pass attractions in advance, you can’t purchase Lightning Lane Single Pass before entering the theme park, and Magic Key holders can’t purchase Lightning Lane Multi Pass before their visit. It’s worth noting that if you already purchased Disney Genie+ service as part of a ticket package and are visiting after July 24, you don’t need to do anything. The service will work exactly as before, just with new names on the app.

Genie isn’t going away entirely. The free portion of the Disney Genie service, which can help plan an itinerary for you based on your specific interests, will still be available through the Disneyland app.

Disneyland Commemorates 69th Anniversary with $69 Ticket Offer for Anaheim Residents

It’s been 25 years since you could buy a one-day ticket to Disneyland for $69, but Anaheim residents can do exactly that this summer under an offer released last week in honor of Disneyland’s 69th anniversary.

The Anaheim Resident Ticket Offer went on sale last week, and is valid for visits between August 5 and September 26, 2024. The one-day, one-park ticket offers admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure for just $69 per person, ages 3 and older. The catch is that you need to be a resident of the city of Anaheim to take advantage of this offer.

You can purchase these promotional tickets online through the Disneyland website, by phone at 800-506-6720, or in person at the Disneyland Resort ticket booths. Disney says you must show proof of residency in ZIP codes 92801 – 92809, 92812, 92814 -92817, 92825, 92850 and 92899, and that eligible residents are limited to purchasing five tickets per person, per day.

There is no option to upgrade this ticket to a one-day park hopper ticket or a multi-day ticket. It’s also important to note that theme park reservations are required to use these tickets – you can’t just buy them and walk right in without a reservation. Disney recommends checking the reservations availability calendar before you purchase the tickets, and make your reservations immediately to secure the dates you want.

These types of residency-restricted offers always bring up a ton of questions about exactly who can use them. Officially, the offer states “proof of eligible residency, including valid government-issued photo ID, is required for purchase and admission.” (Emphasis ours). With prior offers, Disney has allowed the resident to purchase X number of tickets (in this case, five), and bring non-resident guests with them so long as the eligible resident is present at the turnstile to show their ID and proof of residency.

This time, a Disney spokesperson confirmed that all ticket holders need to qualify for the promotion. An Anaheim resident is not permitted to purchase tickets on behalf of others who are not Anaheim residents. This means everyone in your party should come prepared to show proof of residency in the eligible ZIP codes to use this promotional offer.

If you don’t happen to live in the eligible ZIP codes for the Anaheim resident offer, you can still take advantage of the 3-Day Disneyland Ticket Offer for travel through September 26, 2024.

The 3-Day Disneyland Ticket Offer is a 3-day, 1-park-per-day ticket that offers admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure:

The weekday ticket – starting at $149 for ages 3-9; $249 for ages 10 and older. Three weekdays (Mondays through Thursdays only) between June 10 and September 26, 2024
The any day ticket – starting at $199 for ages 3-9; $299, for ages 10 and older. Three days (any day of the week, including weekends) between June 10 and September 26, 2024

You can use every day of the 3-Day Disneyland Ticket at the same theme park, or visit different parks on different days, but you can’t use it to enter both parks on the same day unless you add the park-hopper option ($70 per ticket)

Disney says the offer is to “thank you for being great neighbors,” and comes two months after the Anaheim City Council approved zoning changes which clear the way for Disney to begin a $1.9 Billion expansion of the Disneyland Resort.

What the Disneyland Strike Authorization Means for Your Visit This Week

Late Friday night a coalition of four unions known as the Master Services Council, representing nearly 14,000 Disneyland Resort cast members, announced that its members had voted to authorize an unfair labor practices strike against the theme park giant. The vote came two days after union workers staged a demonstration outside the Disneyland entrance on the park’s 69th anniversary to raise awareness for their contract talks.

The demonstration and now the news of the strike authorization has Disney visitors worried about what to expect when they visit the Disneyland Resort this week, so we wanted to answer the questions we’ve seen pop up on social media.

Are Disneyland workers on strike now?

NO. Disneyland workers are NOT on strike now. It was business as usual when Disneyland and Disney California Adventure opened on Saturday, and should remain so for at least a few more days while negotiations continue.

Friday’s vote only gave the union organizers the right to call a strike – it does not mandate one. Union organizers have specifically told their members NOT to walk out unless their union tells them to do so.

What happens next?

Disney and the unions are scheduled to meet on Monday July 22 and Tuesday July 23 to continue the contract negotiations, which have been ongoing since April.

The unions have said, “a strike is always a last resort,” and that they plan to return to the bargaining table in good faith on Monday. For their part, Disney said in response to the strike authorization vote,

“We greatly appreciate the important roles our cast members play in creating memorable experiences for our guests, and we remain committed to reaching an agreement that focuses on what matters most to them while positioning Disneyland Resort for growth and job creation. Master Services Council’s strike date authorization is not unusual as part of a negotiations process, and we look forward to continuing discussions at upcoming meetings on Monday, July 22 and Tuesday, July 23. A strike has not been scheduled, and Disneyland Resort continues to welcome guests.”

Could there still be a strike?

In a statement to workers, the unions said, “If Disney is not prepared to agree to the offer you deserve after two more days of bargaining, we will move forward with the actions we need to take and that you have overwhelmingly voiced your support for.”

That definitely sounds like the unions are willing to take this to a strike, but they have also told their members there “are many ways we can stand up for our rights.” Depending on how the negotiations go Monday and Tuesday, it’s possible we could see a strike called for later this week, but hopefully it won’t come to that.

Which cast members and departments would be involved in a strike?

The Master Services Council covers nearly 14,000 Disneyland Resort employees, roughly half of the unionized roles at the Resort. This includes attractions (ride operators), candy makers, costuming, custodial, main entrance, parking and resort transportation, store operations, cast member stores and the Anaheim distribution center.

Of those workers, only the Disneyland Park cast members are part of the current bargaining unit, as their contract expired in June. Cast members at Disney California Adventure and Downtown Disney are still covered by a contract which does not expire until September, and so could not strike at this time.

Cast members in food and beverages, Disneyland Resort hotels, entertainment, security, and a number of skilled and professional trades are represented by other unions, and are also not part of this current action.

What happens if there is a strike? Do the parks and hotels close?

In the event of a strike, Disney maintains, “Our Disneyland Resort parks and hotels will remain open and ready to welcome guests if any number of our Disney cast members strike.”

Any strike at this time would primarily impact rides, stores and operations at Disneyland park, as well as parking and trams. In the event of a strike, we’d expect to see a lot of managers back on stage working in roles they haven’t necessarily performed in a while, so there would be an adjustment period. Food, beverage and outdoor vending would not be impacted, and entertainment would likely run on schedule. Again, workers at Disney California Adventure and Downtown Disney can not strike at this time.

There should be no impact at the three Disneyland Resort Hotels.

How long would a strike last?

In a call with members of the bargaining unit last week, union representatives said that they were looking at a “short, three-ish day strike.” Obviously that is subject to change at any time, but it didn’t sound like the union was looking to stage a long-term walkout at this time. In a FAQ for workers, the union says, “If we go on strike, our union leaders and bargaining committee will determine the length that is most strategic for us.”

What is this all about, anyway?

The Master Services Council is negotiating a new contract for its covered workers at the Disneyland Resort. Disney has proposed a 5-year contract with some increases in wages and benefits. The unions wants a 3-year contract, and larger wage increases than Disney is offering, calling the company’s proposals “meager” and “insulting.”

The union is also seeking changes to the attendance policy, seniority bonuses for veteran cast members, and to protect premium pay currently earned by workers with certain special training. (For example, the person who stitches your name on your Mickey Mouse ears earns an hourly premium for that skill.)

The two sides have been meeting since April. In May, the union began distributing buttons to cast members, with an image of a raised Mickey Mouse fist. The union claims Disney began harassing, intimidating and disciplining cast members who wore the buttons on their uniforms, and in June filed Unfair Labor Practice Charges against Disney with the National Labor Relations Board.

Friday’s vote specifically authorized a unfair labor practice strike against Disney, which is different from an economic strike and offers workers different rights and protections.

So, should I cancel my visit / vacation or not?

As I said repeatedly during the pandemic, don’t make any non-refundable travel plans based on anything I can tell you right now.

While this situation is something we’re definitely keeping an eye on, I also go back to the comment made by one of the unions leaders during a call with members last week, when they said “The threat of a strike is more powerful than the strike itself.” The union will walk into the negotiations with Disney on Monday with a strike authorization in hand, which may change the direction of the negotiations. Hopefully the two sides can continue to make progress, and avoid a strike altogether.

If you are strongly pro-union and refuse to cross a picket line, you’ll need to decide what you’re willing to do in the event of a strike – do you only go to Disney California Adventure, or do you skip the trip entirely? Personally I’d give this another week before calling my travel agent to make any changes, but this is going to be up to each individual to decide for themselves and their family.

Reservations open for some Halloween Time premium events

Disneyland Resort visitors have a few ways to upgrade their Halloween Time experience this year, with special dining packages and dessert parties offered during Oogie Boogie Bash. Disney has not yet announced if the Halloween Screams dinner package will be offered at Disneyland’s Plaza Inn this year, and has not yet opened reservations for the Tomorrowland Skyline Lounge for dates during Halloween Time.

Oogie Boogie Bash upgrades

Both the Oogie Boogie Bash dinner package and the dessert party are back for 2024. These packages offer access to a reserved viewing area for the Frightfully Fun Parade during the after-hours party, and reservations are now open. As a reminder, admission to Oogie Boogie Bash is required for either dining package. Oogie Boogie Bash is sold out for 2024, so only existing ticket holders should make reservations.

Wine Country Trattoria Oogie Boogie Bash Dining Parade Package

The three-course, prix-fixe meal is served at Wine Country Trattoria, and includes an appetizer, entree, and dessert.

Dinner is $69 for adults, a $7 increase from 2023, or $41 for children age 3–9, a $4 increase. Tax and tip are not included, and no discounts apply to this package (a $10 up-charge applies if you select the rib eye steak).

As before, Disney is not offering reservations for this as a stand-alone package. You first make a reservation for Wine Country Trattoria online via the Disneyland website or through the Disneyland mobile app as you would for any meal. When you arrive and check in at the restaurant, you must ask to “upgrade” to the Oogie Boogie Bash dining package, “subject to availability.”

After you complete and pay for your meal, you receive a voucher for the reserved viewing area, which Disney says is a standing-only area, with accommodations for guests with disabilities.

Oogie Boogie Bash Dessert Party

If you’d like an actual seat for the Frightfully Fun Parade, you can book the Oogie Boogie Bash dessert party. Guests receive a plated assortment of Halloween-themed desserts, along with beverage selections, including adult beverages for those 21 and older.

There are two parties, one before each parade performance. You can check in up to 45 minutes before the first performance, or 30 minutes before the second, to enjoy the food and drinks before the parade.

Tickets are $89 (the same price as 2022), in addition to event admission, and reservations are available online through the Disneyland web site.

This year Disney encourages people to use the Disneyland mobile app to check in for the event up to one hour prior to reservation time, rather than checking in with a cast member in person. You’ll receive a text when your table is ready, which the website says may be in two or three different locations.

Hungry Bear Barbecue Jamboree to Open in Critter Country

Disneyland released a small bite of news today which will have BBQ fans drooling for more details. The park announced that as part of the refurbishment taking place right now, the Hungry Bear Restaurant in Critter Country will reopen the Hungry Bear Barbecue Jamboree.

Disney’s announcement said, “Inspired by the Country Bears and their travels throughout the greatest music halls in the United States, Disneyland Resort will introduce a menu inspired by the Country Bears’ favorite regional barbecue dishes, which guests can enjoy alongside a soundtrack of their greatest hits.”

No further details about the concept, reopening date or – most critically – the menu were offered at this time, but Disney did clarify that this is not intended as a character dining experience.

The Hungry Bear Restaurant and its bathrooms closed for refurbishment on July 8. The Davey Crockett’s Explorer Canoes and the Critter Country entrance to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge also closed at the same time due to the ongoing construction project for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure.

To be honest I’m not quite sure what to think of this re-theme, especially as part of the larger Critter Country rebranding to incorporate Tiana and friends.

In March Disney announced that The Briar Patch hat shop across from the Hungry Bear entrance will reopen as Ray’s Berets, paying homage to the firefly character from “The Princess and the Frog.”

Pooh Corner is being split into two sections, with the east side slated to reopen as the Critter Club, highlighting the new characters from Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. The east side of the store will keep the Pooh’s Corner name and carry merchandise from the 100 Acre Wood. That store is of course right at the exit from The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh in Critter Country.

Long-time fans know that The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh attraction was built on the site of the former Country Bear Jamboree show, which closed at Disneyland in 2001. While the west coast iteration of the show is long gone, a brand-new version called the “Country Bears Musical Jamboree” just debuted in Walt Disney World this week. (Check out Alan Dalinka’s coverage in the Walt Disney World Update).

Now Disneyland has come full circle, with the Country Bears returning in a very limited form to Critter Country, alongside the English bear and the frog princess. Despite the thematic mash-up, I’m personally thrilled to have a fast-casual BBQ restaurant in Disneyland, though I wonder if we’ll see a change in the menu offerings at River Belle Terrace once this opens.

…Redwood Creek Challenge Trail is scheduled to reopen this Tuesday, July 23 following a lengthy refurbishment. We note that the area is not scheduled to close again before Oogie Boogie Bash begins August 25, so it seems either the elements for the Villains Grove nighttime overlay were already installed, or they can be added after hours.

We also recommend checking the convention calendar at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau website. When looking at that site, remember to note both the number of people and the number of rooms resulting from each convention. A gathering of 25,000 people booking few room nights (indicating most will be driving in to the area for their meeting) can impact traffic around the resort much more than a crowd of 25,000 staying in area hotels. Of course, that second group is going to make finding a hotel room more difficult (and possibly more expensive), so it’s best to book your own room as early as possible if you see that a big convention is in town during your trip.

Don’t get scammed! Never buy tickets from an unofficial or secondary outlet, such as through eBay or Craigslist. Never rent or purchase tickets from people approaching you outside the gates stating they have remaining days or leftover tickets. This practice is against the terms of use for Disneyland admission, and may result in denial of entry. It is also common for criminals to shoplift inactivated Disney theme park tickets from supermarkets to resell them. There is no way to determine if these tickets are valid until you try to use them to enter the parks. 3-Day Disneyland Ticket Offer – June 10 – September 26, 2024

Visit the Disneyland Resort theme parks three weekdays between June 10 and September 26, 2024 for as little as $149 for ages 3-9, or $249 for ages 10 and older using a new discounted ticket which goes on sale May 29, 2024. That represents a savings of up to $219 off the regular price of a three-day, one-park-per-day ticket for children ages 3-9. The adult offer is a $141 discount, and is the same price than the summer 2023 deal.

You can also choose between a ticket good Monday through Thursday OR a slightly more expensive ticket good any day of the week. There are also options to add park hopping and Disney Genie+ service to your ticket at the time of purchase.

This new offer differs from past discouts discounts, so be sure to pay close attention to details before you purchase.

The 3-Day Disneyland Ticket Offer is a 3-day, 1-park-per-day ticket that offers admission to either Disneyland or Disney California Adventure:

The weekday ticket – starting at $149 for ages 3-9; $249 for ages 10 and older. Three weekdays (Mondays through Thursdays only) between June 10 and September 26, 2024
The any day ticket – starting at $199 for ages 3-9; $299, for ages 10 and older. Three days (any day of the week, including weekends) between June 10 and September 26, 2024

There is no “fuse” on this ticket, which means that you can use the first admission on June 10 and wait until September 26 to use the remaining admission. However, remember that you must make a theme park reservation for each day that you want to use the ticket. Disney also warns that reservations for this category of ticket are not guaranteed for any particular dates, and that a date may sell out in this ticket category though other ticket types have reservations of available. It is probably best to purchase early and make reservations as soon as they open for your desired travel dates. Each day of use constitutes one full day of use.

Tickets expire on September 26, 2024, and have no holiday blackouts. That means that you can visit on the 4th of July holiday using a weekday ticket, assuming reservations are available.

May purchase up to 15 tickets per eligible person per day. Tickets are nonrefundable, may not be sold or transferred for commercial use and exclude activities/events separately priced. Offer may not be combined with other ticket discounts or promotions. Subject to restrictions and change or cancellation without notice.

Disney Rewards VISA Cardmember Perks

Disney Character Experience at Disney California Adventure – cardholders have access to a private photo opportunity at Disney California Adventure, where they can meet and pose with a Disney character. Disneyland tickets may be used January 2 through December 13, 2024. There is no blockout period for spring break this year.

Active and retired U.S. military personnel can purchase Disney Military Promotional Tickets for themselves and up to five additional family members or friends. No more than six Disney Military Promotional Tickets may be purchased by any eligible member of the U.S. military (or spouse) pursuant to this offer. All tickets and options are non-transferable and must be used by December 13, 2024.

This offer can only be purchased at a participating US military base ticket office.

2024 Military Hotel discounts

Military discounts are valid for stays most nights from January 2 through December 13, 2024. You can book now through December 10, 2024, and travel must be completed by December 14, 2024.

Disney does not publish the actual discounted rates, and instead asks eligible U.S. military personnel to call (833) 618-0536 to check pricing, availability and to make reservations. In past years, the offer was generally 30% to 40% off, based on room category. Concierge rooms, Signature or Premium suites, or 2-or 3-Bedroom Villas are excluded from the offer, and this offer can not be combined with any other discount.

Unlike the Walt Disney World version, the Disneyland offer allows the eligible service member to book up to two rooms, and allows their spouse (with valid and proper ID) to qualify in the absence of the service member, provided the spouse stays in one of the rooms booked.
