Many Americans can relate to financial distress, especially in recent years. Inflation, fluctuating unemployment, public health crises and more have made it difficult for some Americans to pay their bills, according to WalletHub Financial.

WalletHub compared the 50 states on nine key metrics to see how financial hardship varies across the country. It examined factors such as average credit score and the change in bankruptcy filings between March 2023 and March 2024.

In which states do the most people live in financial distress?

  2. Texas
  3. Nevada
  4. Tennessee
  5. Rhode Island

Which states have the fewest people in financial need?

  1. New Hampshire
  2. Iowa
  3. Connecticut
  4. Vermont
  5. Wisconsin

How does Iowa compare to other states?

Overall, Iowa ranked 49th out of all 50 states. It ranked 37th for credit scores in March 2024 and last for the change in the share of people with distressed accounts. That means Iowans are paying off their credit card debt. Iowa ranked 17th for the change in the number of people filing for bankruptcy between March 2023 and March 2024.

Iowa ranks 46th in search interest in loans, with the city consulting Google and other search engines for loans and financial advice less often than most Americans.
