Gas prices in Florida just dropped by double digits. And Miami? Look at the change

Florida motorists are feeling relieved this week as average gas prices dropped by double digits.

Prices rose in the days leading up to the Fourth of July as travelers hit the roads. According to AAA, motorists paid 27 cents more per gallon in Florida than they did last year during the holiday.

A lot has changed in the past week. Prices are down about 18 cents a gallon across Florida and 15 cents in the Miami area.

According to AAA, the average price on Monday was $3.35 a gallon, the lowest level since July 1.

“Futures prices have fallen over the past two weeks, to their lowest level in more than a month,” said AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins. “This has driven down the cost of producing gasoline. However, Florida gas prices have been volatile this summer and a rally early this week is not out of the question.”

In Miami-Dade, where the average price per gallon was $3.35 on Monday, prices are about 3 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and about 10 cents lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy.

North Florida remains the cheapest region for gas in the state, in some cases 20 cents lower per gallon than South Florida. Palm Beach County and Tallahassee are among the most expensive areas for gas, according to AAA.

What the experts say

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy: “Most of the country has seen a reprieve from rising gasoline prices, thanks to weaker than expected demand for gasoline, building materials, and a quiet period in the tropics. While much of the country has seen average gasoline prices fall, the extreme weather caused a major refinery outside of Chicago to completely lose power early last week, directly impacting the gasoline supply to Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan, and causing prices to rise significantly. We’ve said many times how critical refineries are, and with a long outage we’ll see the impact very quickly, but there will be relief eventually. For now, as we approach the end of the summer holidays, I’m hopeful that gasoline prices will continue to ease slightly over the coming week.”
