Start shopping early for back-to-school items for the best deals

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — It may be the middle of summer, but back-to-school shopping is in full swing!

According to experts, it is important to catch it early.

“That will help you spread your spending. Find the best deals now,” said Emily Foley of Retailmenot.

It appears consumers got the memo, as spending on essentials helped fuel Amazon’s sales this week. Consumers spent a record $14.2 billion during the 48-hour Prime Day sales event.

With families expected to spend more than $800 on school supplies, they’re looking for bargains.

Retailers like Amazon also offer discounts on travel

One deal is 30% off uniforms and backpacks at Target, plus basics like glue, folders and markers for under a dollar.

Walmart is offering hundreds of back-to-school items for under $10. And new this year is the one-click food basket, which contains everything you need to make two weeks’ worth of school meals for about $2 a day.

At Kohl’s, you can get 40% off Levi’s jeans and jackets, while Gap is offering up to 50% off back-to-school clothes.

If you can wait, experts say you can find even deeper discounts over Labor Day weekend.

For even bigger deals, check out refurbished electronics on places like eBay. Just make sure you buy from a certified seller.
