How do the Las Vegas Raiders handle the QB competition in preseason games?

As the Las Vegas Raiders get closer to the time when veterans report for training camp, the battle for the quarterback position is also getting closer.

The Raiders coaches will have their hands full deciding between Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew II. What will make this competition more interesting is how the Raiders go about this process.

Raiders coach Antonio Pierce has said it will be a fair competition and that it is O’Connell’s job to lose.

With no joint practices scheduled for the Raiders, will this be a competition decided in practice, preseason or both? These three preseason games for the Raiders are going to be interesting in terms of how and which players play in the games.

Our Hondo S. Carpenter Sr. and Spun’s Matt Hladik discussed how the Raiders will approach the quarterback competition on a recent episode of the “Las Vegas Raiders Insider Podcast.”

“If you’re going to play Davante Adams with him (O’Connell), you’ve got to play Davante Adams with Gardner Minshew II,” Carpenter said. “I almost want the Raiders to come out and say it’s going to be a battle. But it’s going to be a battle in practice, because we can’t control all the variables in preseason games.”

“The staff always evaluates everything,” Hladik said. “They usually go in with at least a little bit of lean, maybe one way or another. Or if it’s a tie, the tie goes to Aidan O’Connell because he’s a guy they drafted. … He’s a guy they’ve invested in a little bit, they want to see what he can do. Starting in that position is obviously an advantage for Aidan O’Connell. I think you’re going to see Antonio Pierce and the offensive staff evaluate through practice. … I think it’s almost like a practice evaluation. I would assume you’ll see both quarterbacks in the preseason. … I think it’s better for Aidan O’Connell because he has a body of work with this Raiders staff, even though Gardner Minshew has more NFL playing experience. I think a lot of it comes down to practice. It comes down to what they look like behind the scenes.”
