Work on the Mississippi River Bridge at Lansing Resumes

Construction on the new bridge over the Mississippi River near Lansing is set to resume soon. Work was halted in early June due to high river levels and subsequent flooding. Pete Hjelmstad, a field service coordinator for the Iowa DOT, said there is still cleanup to be done before work on the bridge can resume.

“The problem is their construction site – the area they use to set up equipment – on the south side, and also the construction site for the piers and abutments on the Wisconsin side of the river. They’re going to have to go in there and clean it up because it’s going to be full of debris and everything,” he said.

High water levels also delayed construction of the new Iowa Highway 3 bridge over the Cedar River in Waverly. Originally scheduled to begin July 8, Hjemstad says the project is now scheduled to begin Aug. 1.
