Minuteman Press Franchise Review: New President’s Club

FARMINGDALE, N.Y., July 22, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Minuteman Press International, the world’s largest and #1 rated print franchise, is proud to celebrate the growth and achievements of its franchisees. Over the past few years, several of our new Minuteman Press International President’s Club members have been recognized for their various accomplishments. We caught up with a few of these owners to congratulate them on joining the President’s Club for achieving more than $1 million in gross sales in the year ending 2023. They shared what this milestone means to them, how they grew their businesses, and what advice they have for other business owners.

Diana Renollet, East Indianapolis, IN

Diana Renollet has come a long way in four years. As the owner of Minuteman Press in East Indianapolis, IN since June 2020, Diana has worked hard to achieve President’s Club status. Diana shares:

Joining the President’s Club: “This makes us very proud of our team. We find this incredibly encouraging.”

Keys to Growth: “1. The internet marketing program is the biggest contributor to our success by bringing in new business; 2. The second key to our success is acquisitions; we had one in October 2022 and October 2023; and 3. Customer service is the third key for us. We are friendly and respond quickly to requests for quotes.”

Why customer service is important: “I have often heard new clients say that they have had multiple requests for quotes on projects. They say things like:

  • ‘We chose your company because you were so responsive and nicer than the other people we received quotes from…’
  • “You make us feel like you’ve done this before and that you understand our needs better…”
  • “We felt it would be easier for us to work with you.”

Benefits of owning your own business:

Passion for print: “Personally, printing has been my passion for decades. When I can compete in the printing world with my own company, it feels like I am a kid in a playground. It is our playground and I know I am a strong player in this field. I love the competition with other printers.”

Positive working environment: “We also take great pride in providing our employees with good jobs; we have a positive work culture and it feels like a good place to spend the day. After decades of production print team and project management, I can finally follow my own management playbook. I have a long history of building successful, strong production print teams – I know what works, how to motivate, inspire and engage. However, we are no longer limited to following someone else’s rules and guidelines.”

Employee Appreciation: “We are grateful that as owners we can lead our team in a way that lifts them up and makes them feel like they are truly part of this company. As we reach new milestones, we are committed to sharing our success with our employees. Our employees are highly motivated, they feel valued and they demonstrate this by consistently going above and beyond their responsibilities. This makes us truly proud.”

3 tips for success/advice for others:

1. “Register and maximize your investment in the Internet Marketing Program and follow the plans that the Ministry of the Interior is rolling out.

2. Find other printers in your area, drive around the stores and see what you can learn about them. Are the owners nearing retirement? Look for acquisitions that make sense.

3. Be faster and friendlier than your competitors when sending out quotes. Also accept full responsibility for your success. Without exception and regardless of the circumstances, your success will always be your responsibility.”

Alana and Ramon Alvarez, Colorado Springs, CO

Alana & Ramon Alvarez were previously mentioned in April 2023 for their significant revenue growth in Colorado Springs, CO since purchasing their Minuteman Press franchise in July 2019. Ramon shares:

To become a member of the President’s Club: “When we decided to start and run our own business, we created a plan that included reaching this milestone and becoming a President’s Club member. We are excited to have reached this stage of our journey and appreciate all of the support Minuteman Press has provided. We look forward to continuing our growth and serving our community.”

Keys to Growth: “We can confirm that there is no silver bullet in business. Our growth strategy is multifaceted and encompasses fundamentals that have proven successful in my roles in Corporate America. The specific tactics within our fundamental strategy may evolve, but the fundamentals remain as we continue our journey.”

4 tips for success:

1. Marketing:

  • Internet Marketing Program: About 50% of our new customers come through the Internet Marketing Program, which continues to drive our customer base.
  • Networks: Engaging in the community in meaningful ways. I have served on several business advocacy boards in the community, building brand awareness and influencing major clients to give us an opportunity to serve.
  • References: Now that we have built a track record in our community, referrals have become a key source for acquiring new customers. By taking a multi-faceted approach, we have been able to operate without any single customer accounting for more than 6% of our total revenue.

2. Products: By diversifying our offering to our clients, we can create a one-stop-shop for them, making it easier for them to meet their marketing needs.

3. Talents: By creating a mutually beneficial environment for our team, we have been able to attract and retain great talent, although there is no finish line for recruiting and retaining talent. Our ambitious mission when we took over the store was to create great customer experiences through a high-performing team that delivers quality, speed, and reliability. We are proud that our customer reviews and feedback exemplify that mission 4.5 years later.

4. Execution: When we took over the shop, we focused on learning and implementing the proven MMP manual. Since then, we have focused on ensuring our mission is accomplished with every work order and customer interaction. It is important that our customers have an excellent experience.”

Benefits of owning your own business: “Alana and I met at work 32 years ago and are now enjoying it again! For years after Alana retired, I would go out weekly to “slay the dragon” and come back to provide my family with my “leftover” energy. Now we are working together toward a common goal and it is priceless! Our two sons have worked for us on and off at Minuteman Press and we are grateful that we had the opportunity to provide them with a place to earn some extra money while spending time with them. Professionally, I am grateful that every minute I spend working on our business directly impacts our personal and professional brand. Owning your own business is not always easy, but the rewards are immense.”

Advice for others: “My advice is to have a plan and stay agile. Include MMP in that plan, because we are not reinventing the wheel. Also, surround yourself with people in your team who are better than you in their assigned roles. Interestingly enough, these elements are similar to what I have applied in my previous jobs.”

Elle & Richie Moore, Macon, GA

Elle and Richie Moore were previously featured in the March of 2023 for their move and grand reopening of Minuteman Press in Macon, GA. The family has owned the business since June 2017. Richie shares:

To become a member of the President’s Club: “This was one of our big goals we wanted to achieve over the last few years and it feels great to achieve a big goal! Now we can look forward to the next big goal!”

Keys to Growth: “We moved to a much larger building and I think being able to give our clients tours and show them what we can do has been a big driver for us this past year. And of course networking! I’m the chair of the BNI Macon Money Chapter and that has grown exponentially this past year as well. If you build relationships with your clients, the money will come.”

Benefits of owning your own business: “Right now, it’s the pride in the work we do that’s a big motivator for Elle and I. We love putting our name on what we print, figuratively and literally! We love to proudly say, ‘We printed that!’ It’s a big reward for us to love what we do and being able to do it together is a bonus!”

Advice for others: “Be open to change and take good care of your work family!”

Angila and Scott Allen, Brookfield, WI

Angila & Scott Allen were featured in a President’s Club spotlight article in March 2024. Since July 2017, they have owned Minuteman Press in Brookfield, WI. During that interview, Angila shared the following points that are worth repeating:

To become a member of the President’s Club: “We feel very blessed to have the great team we have at Minuteman Press in Brookfield and the support from MPIHQ! We don’t take it for granted.”

Keys to Growth: “1. Using Accuzip and sending out more mailings; 2. Spending more on internet marketing programs; 3. Google reviews, with over 100 reviews; 4. Networking; and 5. Customer referrals.”

3 tips for success/advice for others:

“1. Teamwork! Honestly, I think the secret to reaching that First Million is our team commitment. We have a great team! We believe in each other. We work hard to do the very best for every customer and to quickly resolve anything that needs to be addressed. The size of the job doesn’t matter.”

2. FLEX reports: Analyzing FLEX reports to see which services are most popular is also helpful. We evaluate them to see if we can offer services in-house.

3. Investing in our company/team and daily meetings: We want our team to be equipped with the products/software and knowledge needed to do their job well and efficiently. We started regular daily production meetings in 2023 and it has made a huge difference in keeping us all on the same page. We can always learn.”
