President Joe Biden’s decision to suspend his re-election campaign comes a month ahead of the Democratic National Convention, where a candidate will be formally nominated to run for president.

Biden, who made his decision public on sundayendorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the nominee, but whether she leads the field will be determined by delegates from all 50 states and U.S. territories at the DNC later this summer.

Iowa’s DNC delegates will have their own choice of how they cast their votes, though Biden’s support for Harris “means a lot,” Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart told reporters on Sunday.

Several Iowa Democrats praised Biden’s decision, including former U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin who described it as a “courageous and selfless step.”

Iowa Republicans were also quick to call on Biden to resign.

When is the 2024 Democratic National Convention?

The DNC is August 19-22. The party initially planned to hold the roll call vote, the process of formally counting delegates, virtually before the convention. It is not yet clear when that will be held.
