‘Camp Justice’ Promotes Future Careers in Connecticut’s Criminal Justice System

ROCKY HILL, Conn. (WTNH) — Prosecutors are bringing dozens of teenagers to their office in Rocky Hill.

Not because the students did something wrong. In fact, they did something very right.

Young lawyers go to Camp Justice

They learn all about the criminal justice system at what the state Division of Criminal Justice calls “Camp Justice.”

“Obviously the focus is on prosecution and the prosecutorial function, but we have judges who come and talk to the kids,” Chief State’s Attorney Patrick J. Griffin explained. “We have defense attorneys, we have some field trips to courthouses.”

Last summer, the state’s top prosecutors opened their doors to campers for the first time, showing them everything from courthouses to law enforcement demonstrations.

It really made an impression on Oliver K, who returned this year as a camp counselor.

“You have to see all the different parts of the justice system and how they all work together to create a justice system that is fair and that tries to bring about the best for everyone,” Oliver said.

Camp Justice runs all week from 10am to 3pm. Transportation and lunch are included and it’s all free.

The state Division of Criminal Justice hopes students will learn more about the system and perhaps one day join it.

“I think this is important work on all levels, and maybe we can ignite a spark in one or two of these young people that will bear fruit down the road,” Griffin said.

Now that it’s only been a year and a day, it’s too early to see the results, but it’s certainly opened Oliver’s eyes.

“This camp really showed me what the possibilities are for a career in the legal sector,” said Oliver.

If you know of a student who will soon be entering eighth grade and would be interested in participating in this camp next summer, please email [email protected] for more information.
