Bakes for Breast Cancer, the Massachusetts nonprofit dedicated to funding breast cancer researchers and clinicians, is proud to announce its 25th anniversary.e anniversary in 2024 and event dates. These will include Edwards Brothers Supermarket in Dover-Foxcroft from Friday, July 26 through Thursday, August 1 with freshly baked Maine whoopie pies.

Founder Carol Sneider launched this event and nonprofit in memory of her mother who lost her battle with breast cancer at the age of 43. Sneider’s fondest memories are of spending time in the kitchen baking bread, pies, and other sweet treats.

Since its inception in 1999, Bakes for Bakes Cancer has encouraged restaurants, cafes, bakeries, pastry shops, grocery stores and other dessert businesses to designate one of their sweet treats during the weeklong event with 100 percent of the proceeds going to Bakes for Breast Cancer to fund breast cancer research. Participating establishments also have the opportunity to offer their entire dessert roster with 50 percent of the proceeds going back to the organization. Over the past 25 years, Bakes for Breast Cancer has raised more than $2 million and more than 5,000 different establishments have participated in the annual weeklong event throughout Massachusetts and as it has expanded to different regions in different years.

“Since 1999, Bakes for Breast Cancer has been on a mission to do our part to eradicate breast cancer for good, one sweet treat at a time,” Sneider said. “We’re proud to continue to expand into states and major cities, and we’ll continue to do so in areas with thriving culinary scenes with establishments that share the same mission as ours. The statistics on the number of women and men directly and indirectly affected by breast cancer are alarming, and we will continue to do our part to help reduce those numbers.”

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. In 2023, an estimated 297,790 women and 2,800 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women, excluding skin cancer, and it is estimated that by 2023, approximately 30 percent of all new cancer diagnoses in women will be breast cancer. On average, a woman in the United States is diagnosed with breast cancer every 2 minutes, and approximately 15 percent of women who are diagnosed have a family history of breast cancer.

Bakes for Breast Cancer is an annual “sweet” to raise money for breast cancer research and care, in which hundreds of restaurants, bakeries, cafes and shops in 10 different states or regions participate by donating all sales of one specific dessert, or fifty percent of the proceeds from their entire dessert menu, to breast cancer care and research. Proceeds from the event benefit Bakes for Breast Cancer, Inc., a nonprofit breast cancer organization dedicated to funding breast cancer researchers and clinicians.
