Angela Rodell, former head of Permanent Fund, in race for mayor of Juneau

Monday is the last day for candidates to file for the Juneau city and borough elections. Over the weekend, Angela Rodell, former executive director of the Alaska Permanent Fund, began collecting the 25 signatures needed to run for city office. It became clear that the rumors were true: Two-term Mayor Beth Weldon will not have an easy path to re-election.

Rodell has served as a financial advisor for the past several years, since leaving as CEO of the Alaska Permanent Fund. She has also served as Commissioner of Revenue and Deputy Commissioner of Revenue – Treasury Division.

Her documents are not yet listed on the elections tab of the Juneau.org website, nor at the Alaska Public Offices Commission, where she must also file her financial information, but the news is out.

Rodell is a Republican, while current Mayor Beth Weldon is a non-party candidate. Weldon recently lost her husband, served in the fire department and is well-liked. Rodell will have to work hard to unseat her.

In Juneau, the mayor has no real power for the most part, other than to chair meetings and cut ribbons. The city manager answers to the assembly and has much more power than the mayor.

These are the candidates running for Juneau’s municipal election, which will be held by mail and ends on October 1 (the list will be updated later on June 22, the day of the last filing):
