The New Bands Deftones’ Stephen Carpenter Is Listening To

Deftones guitarist Stephen Carpenter admits he still has a lot of catching up to do, but during a recent visit to Rock Feed, the musician revealed some of the newer acts that have caught his attention of late. In fact, he gave credit to three acts that have generated a fair amount of buzz in recent years.

Deftones guitarist is on sleep token

When asked what Carpenter thinks of more modern heavy bands with a different sound, using Sleep Token as an example, the guitarist admitted that this is one of the bands he is currently a fan of.

“Sleep Token is one of those bands. I love those guys. They’re amazing,” the Deftones guitarist explained. He joins a list of Sleep Token fans in the music industry, including Serj Tankian, Amy Lee, Corey Taylor and more who have expressed their love for the masked rockers.

Who else likes Stephen Carpenter?

“Also Bilmuri,” Carpenter noted, pointing to the band shirt he wore in the interview. “I have (the new album). I love it and like I said before, it’s great, he’s been around for a little over a decade, Bilmuri’s been around for practically a decade at this point, and so I thought, ‘Where have I been for the last ten years?’ I’ve never heard the name, let alone the music. That’s not even his first band.”

After admitting that he’s also a fan of the musician’s videos, Carpenter wanted to highlight another band whose history he’s only just now discovering.

“Another band on that list… when I first met them they were Eskimo Callboy, but now they’re Electric Callboy. Again, they’ve got a whole catalog of records. We’ve probably done shows with them in Europe and I didn’t even know about it and I was like, ‘How have I never heard of this?’ I’m just in my own little bubble with all my people doing what we do.”

More time for Stephen Carpenter

In the discussion, Carpenter gave some insight into why he pulled out of the band’s international tour, citing a mix of fear of flying and a desire for more time with his family. But in the discussion, he also spoke about having more time to watch more music and also revealed during the chat his desire to start a YouTube channel and be more active on social media.
