Get a look inside Topeka Cat Café, which will open its doors Wednesday

Pet lovers might be drawn to this new café like cats to catnip.

April Liang and Toni Fowler hoped to bring the first cat café to the capital city — dubbed the Topeka Cat Café — nearly eight months ago. Now, their dream is about becoming a reality. Topeka Cat Café will open its doors on Wednesday.

Liang said they are thrilled to bring the business to Topeka.

“Our goal is to create a relaxing environment that promotes animal welfare and community connection,” she said in a news release. “Whether you need to unwind with a cozy kitty after a long day or want to play with kittens on the weekend, the cat lounge has you covered. Anyone can spend time with the adorable cats.”

When will the Topeka Cat Café have its grand opening?

Topeka Cat Café will have its grand opening Wednesday, July 24 at 400 SW 29th St., Suite H.

How will the new business operate?

In its 1,400-square-foot space, the Topeka Cat Café provides a kitten room and a main cat lounge area. Visitors will have the opportunity to spend time with adoptable cats, as well as purchase prepackaged food and drinks.

The main cat lounge includes a seating space for customers, along with multiple cat beds and furniture. The kitten room includes a small seating area for smaller groups. Individuals or groups of as many as 10 people will be allowed at once in the main cat lounge, while five will be allowed in the kitten room.

Fowler and Liang said to enhance the experience, booking a time to visit is recommended. Walk-ins will be welcome, but guests may have to wait if the lounge is fully booked. All visits will start on the hour and last 50 minutes.

Bookings can be made at www.topekacatcafe.com.

Cats can be adopted at the Topeka Cat Café

In partnership with Royal Canin, the café will offer adoption kits to those interested.

“All adopters are given a free month of food from Royal Canin, a free DNA test, educational materials, and exclusive discounts on must have items in their gift shop, such as pet carriers, bed, brushes, and toy,” the news release said.

If you continue to purchase food from Royal Canin, 10% will be given back to the associated rescue organization.

Customers can purchase small gift shop items at the Topeka Cat Cafe’

In addition to spending time with the cats, the Topeka Cat Café includes a gift shop offering cat-themed merchandise, T-shirts, pet accessories, cat toys and more.

Prepackaged food and drinks available for purchase at the new business include small bakery items like chocolates from Hazel Hill, brownies from Bella’s Home Baked Goods, croissants from Reisman’s Bakery and more. Bottled drinks are also available for purchase.

Customers can purchase Topeka Cat Café-themed coffee mugs, magnets, bags and more.

When visitors purchase from Topeka Cat Café, they are directly supporting the cats living there. The café covers all costs for housing, food, litter, supplies, staffing, utilities and more, the release said.
