Man gets lengthy prison sentence for sexually assaulting and strangling woman in Lansing Township

LANSING TWP. — A man with a lengthy criminal record has been sentenced to at least 50 years in prison for sexually and physically abusing a woman in April 2022.

Scott Sylvester, 40, was convicted by a jury in April of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, aggravated stalking, aggravated domestic abuse, witness intimidation and interference with electronic communications.

Ingham County Judge Rosemarie Aquilina last week sentenced him to 50 to 75 years in prison, with 755 days credited for time served in pretrial detention, before the CSC conviction, court records show.

The victim, who had a young child with Sylvester, said he repeatedly punched her, verbally abused her and choked her in a bedroom of her Lansing Township home. She said he later broke her cellphone. She reported the incident to police the next day after she received a new cellphone, she testified.

She said she had bruises all over her body from the attack.

Sylvester was accused of stalking, harassing and threatening the woman, according to Lansing Township police. He was arrested and charged in the case in May 2022. He was later released on bail before his bail was revoked, police said.

“Yeah, I feel like I’m on edge every second until he’s caught. And when I got the call that he was released, I packed up everything in my house, my son, my dog and I, and we went away for about three weeks,” the victim testified during Sylvester’s preliminary hearing in 2022.

While that case was still pending, Sylvester was charged with sexually assaulting another woman identified as his girlfriend. Those allegations also date back to early 2022. The woman testified that he sexually assaulted her in a vehicle while they were driving.

Sylvester was ordered to stand trial earlier this year on charges of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and domestic violence. It was unclear whether those charges will move forward now that he has been sentenced to a minimum of 50 years in prison.

In a sentencing memorandum, an Ingham County assistant district attorney asked Aquilina to give Sylvester a lengthy sentence, saying he had eight prior felony convictions.

Lansing Township police praised the work of Sparrow’s Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner program, the Center for Survivors at Michigan State University and officers from the Ingham County Jail for providing important evidence of stalking from jail.
