Commanders Announce Farewell Ceremony for Darrell Green

The Washington Commanders announced that one of the franchise’s best players will receive a long-awaited honor. Washington will retire the jersey number of Pro Football Hall of Famer Darrell Green.

Washington will retire Green’s jersey number during a special ceremony in Week 6 of the upcoming 2024 NFL season.

The commanders boasted about the announcement in a post on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.

The decision to retire Green’s number was made long ago. He’s one of the best players in franchise history, period. He’s earned All-Pro honors four times, made seven trips to the Pro Bowl and earned a spot on the NFL’s 1990s All-Decade Team. The all-time great was also named to the 100th Anniversary All-Time Team and was named one of the 80 greatest players in Washington’s franchise history.

Green also won two Super Bowls with Washington: Super Bowl XXII and Super Bowl XXVI.

Green had a career that spanned two decades. He won four NFL Fastest Man competitions and is considered one of the fastest NFL players ever. Green holds numerous NFL records, including most consecutive seasons with at least one interception (19). He also holds the Washington record for most career interceptions, starts, games played, and most pick-sixes.

If anyone deserves this honor, it’s Darrell Green, congratulations.
