Election 2024 live updates: Harris gains more support from Democrats after Biden’s departure

In his first public remarks since announcing he would withdraw from the re-election campaign, President Biden called on Vice President Harris to attend campaign headquarters in Delaware and urged campaign staff to rally behind Harris. “Embrace her, she’s the best,” Biden said. Harris, meanwhile, offered a preview of her campaign message about her role as a former prosecutor taking on a criminal. “I will proudly pit my record against his,” Harris said of Republican nominee Donald Trump. Democrats continue to rally behind Harris to take over the party’s presidency. Harris received a rapid outpouring of support Monday from top Democrats, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said he and Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) plan to meet with Harris “soon” and have more to say. He said Harris’ candidacy “has excited the country.”
