Alabama Democratic Reps Support Kamala Harris’ Presidential Campaign

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) — Alabama Democratic delegates are reconsidering the 2024 election after President Biden decided to withdraw from the race.

Many are rallying behind Vice President Kamala Harris after Biden’s endorsement on Sunday, but some say an open convention may not be out of the question.

“Biden had vision and a lot of knowledge, and the country and the world lost,” said Alabama Democratic Conference Chairman Dr. Joe L. Reed. “With Vice President Kamala Harris, the American people will be just as good off as they would have been if Biden had won.”

Sen. Robert Stewart (D-Selma) was disappointed with President Biden’s decision but said it was vital to support Harris’ campaign.

“She has really grown tremendously during her time as vice president,” Stewart said.

Sen. Kirk Hatcher (D-Montgomery) is confident that by uniting behind Harris, chaos at this year’s convention can be avoided.

“We are all in favor of supporting the vice president so that we don’t go into a chaotic convention,” Hatcher said.

State Rep. Juandalynn Givan (D-Birmingham) says Harris is ready to take responsibility and support her campaign whether or not there is an open convention.

“Whoever comes on the Democratic side has to be able to do a multitude of things. First, they have to be able to mobilize and retain the vote of black women,” Givan said. “So for me, I’m going with Kamala Harris. She’s educated, she’s smart, she’s beautiful, and she’s ready for this moment.”

The Democratic National Convention will take place in Chicago from August 19 to 22.
