Mike Brown: Kings will hire coach ‘when the time is right’

Former Sacramento Kings assistant Jordi Fernandez took the head coaching job in Brooklyn, bringing with him a pair of their player development coaches in Deividas Dulkys and Dutch Gaitley. More recently, Stockton head coach and reigning G-League Coach of the Year teamed up with JJ Redick in Los Angeles. That leaves Mike Brown with shoes to fill for his staff heading into the 2045-25 season.

Brown said during the Las Vegas Summer League, “It’s a dream come true, but it’s a bit of a nightmare” to see so many of his staff members being hired elsewhere.

“I’d rather take the dream part, because that’s what it’s all about,” he said. “I was an intern once. I was a video coordinator once. I was a player development guy once. I was an assistant coach once and you want opportunities to grow and you want to be at, hopefully, good organizations to get that opportunity… it speaks volumes to what we’re trying to accomplish as a staff, as an organization, as a team…”

With plenty left, including Jay Triano, Luke Loucks, Doug Christie, Leandro Barbosa and others, Sacramento’s head coach said he’s “moved a lot of guys up” in response to the recent departures. Plans to look outside have already begun, too.

“I’m a pretty, I guess, slow guy when it comes to that,” Mike Brown said. “I’m a pretty patient guy when it comes to that. So I’ve met people here in Vegas at the Summer League. I’ve met people in Sacramento.

“When the time is right, we will hire someone and we are confident that good coaches will come in and do as good a job as the coaches who left.”
