Mark Canevale dies at age 64, a week after former PGA Tour winner did radio work at Scottish Open

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Mark Carnevale, a former PGA Tour winner who had refereed tournaments for Sirius XM Radio, died Monday, a week after playing his last tournament, the PGA Tour said. He was 64.

The tour did not disclose the cause of death, only reporting that he died suddenly.

Carnevale won the 1992 Chattanooga Classic and was named PGA Tour rookie of the year. He later won on what is now the Korn Ferry Tour.

He was most recently known as one of the lead announcers for Sirius XM PGA Tour Radio since 2005, and he recently covered the penultimate group action at the Scottish Open. He was scheduled to be in Minnesota this week working the 3M Open.

“He was a member of that elite club, a winner on the PGA Tour, and then held numerous positions within the industry, most recently as a key voice in PGA Tour Radio coverage,” said commissioner Jay Monahan. “Mark knew the game and did a tremendous job of conveying insights from his unique perspective — and with an engaging spirit and sense of humor.”

Carnevale, the son of a college basketball coach, was born in Annapolis, Maryland, while Ben Carnevale was coaching at Navy. The family later moved to Williamsburg, Virginia, and Carnevale played collegiate golf at James Madison.
