Zane Smith’s wife takes sides as NASCAR splits over Indianapolis ruling

Kyle Larson drove well and his team executed a fantastic strategy to get him to the front in Indianapolis. He went on to win the race, although the manner in which he won was not appreciated by everyone. One of the people who spoke out against it was McCall Smith, wife of Cup Series driver Zane Smith.

On the final restart, Ryan Preece spun before the white flag dropped. NASCAR decided to wait until the white flag dropped to issue the caution, giving Larson the win. It didn’t take long for McCall to take to social media to lambast the organizers.

“The car was sitting there for a whole lap, but wait and give the warning as soon as the 5 enters the white lane, lol… joke,” she wrote on X. Preece sat idle on the track for a while before the caution was called. At any other time during the race, that yellow flag would have been waved immediately. It gave fans a chance to speculate that NASCAR had picked Yung Money as the favorite to win.

That said, the 2021 Cup Series champion had a solid race. Driver Tyler Reddick of 23 XI Racing wasn’t far behind, but Larson seemed to have the situation under control.

However, another restart could have caused problems for the HMS driver. If that had been the case, Reddick could have passed Larson and perhaps won the race.

Fans on social media responded to McCall’s tweet, sharing their thoughts on the incident. “100% agree. Hit the wall on the inside, no reason not to throw the warning,” a user responded. “Typical NASCAR,” joked another. The promotions’ decision to issue the warning after the white flag will certainly be a point of discussion in the coming days.

“Any other driver ahead will be given a yellow card if he touches the inside wall,” a fan wrote on X. “If the Hendrick driver had been in second place it would have been a warning,” responded another. The general consensus was that there was bewilderment, since NASCAR usually doesn’t wait that long to issue a warning. Especially if a car is stationary on the track, this could have led to a dangerous situation.
