Rail News – SacRT Begins Construction on Transit Center Improvement Project For Railroad Career Professionals

The Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) has begun construction on the Watt/Interstate-80 Transit Center Improvement Project in Sacramento, California.

The agency recently invested millions of dollars in the transit center, including upgrading two elevators, and will spend $26 million on new improvements over the next two years, SacRT officials said in a news release.

The project includes widening the Watt Avenue Bridge, constructing an open-air staircase connecting Watt Avenue to the transit center, developing a new bus/pedestrian plaza, and improving the I-80 ramps and the portion of the transit center under Watt Avenue.

Construction has begun on changes to the bus lane at the light rail station. The project is expected to be completed in early 2026.

“These improvements not only make the public transport hub more accessible, but also more inviting and better able to handle a greater number of passengers,” said Henry Li, general manager and CEO of SacRT.
