The latest news about America’s #1 prospect Aaliyah Chavez

Kim Mulkey and the LSU women’s basketball program continue to ramp up the pressure for the No. 1 prospect in the 2025 cycle, Aaliyah Chavez.

The top prospect in the current recruiting cycle recently won the Nike Nationals after leading her Cy Fair team to the championship game.

Now, less than 24 hours later, Chavez has announced her final six schools: LSU, Texas Tech, UCLA, South Carolina and Oklahoma.

It’s been a busy summer for Chavez. A three-month stretch that has seen the exciting bucket-getter further cement her status as the No. 1 player in America, and she’s working out an official visiting schedule that will include the Tigers.

After speaking with a source familiar with Chavez’s recruitment, we reported that LSU is firmly in the mix, with the Texas Longhorns and Texas Tech Red Raiders also ramping up their bets.

She will look to sign a program during the Early Signing Period in December, as Mulkey and Co. are certainly starting to make moves in the right direction.

Chavez paid an informal visit to LSU this summer, where she had the chance to speak with Mulkey, meet several LSU players and discuss the game plan moving forward.

It was another face-to-face encounter for Chavez and Mulkey. We’ve seen the LSU staff check in on Chavez multiple times, from AAU tournaments to her high school playoff games earlier this year.

Now, with an unofficial visit under its belt that gave Chavez a chance to check out Baton Rouge, LSU is making its presence felt in its recruiting efforts.

“They recruited me really well,” Chavez told On3’s Talia Goodman. “I think I talk to at least one assistant coach every day. They definitely talk to my parents a lot. They’re a winning program too and I’d love to win… (The visit) was fun. It was definitely different than the other visits. They had all the girls there when I was there, so they were in my photo shoots. It was definitely a different vibe. I love their energy too – at the photo shoot it was so high. There was no low energy at all.”

While Mulkey was in Chicago on Sunday, Chavez put in one of her best performances of the summer in a quarterfinal against Boo Williams, scoring 34 points in the win.

In her second match of the day, Chavez converted her momentum into a showdown with Team Takeover, scoring 25 points to lead Cy Fair to the Nike Nationals Championship.

Chavez is clearly the top target for the 2025 class. Mulkey and his assistants Gary Redus, Kaylin Rice and Daphne Mitchell will travel several times to see the prodigious scorer in person.

The Monterey High School point guard averaged 37.8 points, 10.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 3.5 steals per game and was named Texas Gatorade Player of the Year during her junior campaign.

Mulkey and Co. are now eager to secure Chavez for an official visit this fall, prior to the Early Signing Period in December, as the battle for America’s No. 1 prospect continues.
