Seven high school football players we like to keep an eye on in the Montgomery area

With the 2024 high school football season just a little over a month away, there are a few players The Montgomery Advertiser is excited to see on the field this fall.

The following seven players hail from across the River Region and play on both sides of the ball. They had exciting seasons in 2023, with some leading the state in a few categories, and enter the 2024 season as some of the best in the area at their respective positions.

Below is a list of some of the promising talents we’re looking to keep an eye on in the 2024 football season:

Trey Berry, Carver

Senior, running back

Entering his final season with the Lanier Poets, Berry finished with 1,361 all-purpose and eight touchdowns as a junior. On defense, he had 15 tackles and 14 tackles for loss, making him a threat on both sides of the ball. Now at Carver for his senior year, Berry will share the backfield with Alabama commit Anthony Rogers under new head coach Bobby Carr.

JaMicheal Jones, Pike Road

Junior, running back

The four-star prospect racked up 1,080 yards and 18 total touchdowns in his first season with the Patriots. With offers from some of the nation’s top schools, Jones hopes to continue his dominance on the field.

Wils Johnson, Sint-Jacobs

Senior, Athlete

In a new era of Saint James football, Johnson will be a key part of the Trojans’ 2024 squad. Last season, Johnson finished with 155 tackles and four sacks. He added three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. On offense, he finished with six receptions for 77 total yards.

Cason Myers

Sophomore, Pike Road

In his first season with the Patriots, Myers finished with 2,140 yards through the air, along with 15 touchdowns. His 177 total pass completions helped Pike Road to a semifinal playoff spot. With a season under their belt and plenty of returning weapons on offense, the Patriots will be a fun team to watch in Class 6A.

Tristan Norman, Carver

Senior, wide receiver

Norman had a busy offseason when he committed to Texas A&M University. The three-star route-running technician finished with 44 receptions for 845 yards and 10 touchdowns. Now, with Carver in Class 7A, Norman is looking to showcase his skills at the highest level of high school football in the state.

Jotavion Pierce, Montgomery Catholic

Senior, Athlete

Pierce finished with 91 solo tackles, 41 assisted tackles, five tackles for loss, a sack and an interception. On offense, he added 464 all-purpose yards and five touchdowns. The three-star Tulane commit will be an anchor for the Knights’ quest for back-to-back titles.

Derrick Vinson Jr., Montgomery Academy

Senior, wide receiver

Vinson led the River Region with 66 receptions for 1,461 yards and 14 touchdowns for the Eagles last season. As the leader of the offense, Vinson will be a force for opponents to play against.
