Democrats attempt to canonize Biden as ‘George Washington’ after pressuring him to withdraw from race

Democratic Party members of Congress portrayed President Biden as “George Washington” for withdrawing from the 2024 race — days after party leaders pressured the 81-year-old commander in chief to withdraw his candidacy.

The Democratic machine’s three-week, high-pressure campaign to oust the president, while donors threatened to cut off their donations unless he resigned, succeeded Sunday. Key Democratic allies including actor George Clooney and dozens of congressional Democrats wrote letters that insiders told The Post sealed Biden’s fate.

In the days following his fall, Biden was praised for “preserving democracy” and lauded for his “selflessness” in suspending his campaign — with Democratic lawmakers even comparing him to Washington, the first American to step down after two terms before term limits were set.

Biden “will go down in history as one of the best presidents America has ever had,” House Democratic vice chairman Ted Lieu told reporters on Tuesday — a sharp turnaround from the party’s anti-presidential rhetoric just days earlier.

“His selfless act this weekend reminds me of what George Washington did when he voluntarily gave up his re-election bid and put country first,” the California representative continued.

House Democratic Leader Pete Aguilar argued in the press conference that “future generations, men and women, will remember that Joseph Robinette Biden served as a beacon of hope around the world to ensure that we put patriotism first.”

Rep. Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) — who ran against Biden in the primaries on the grounds that he was too old to serve — also drew the comparison to Washington when he referred to a “Hamilton” scene.

“Remember the scene in Hamilton, when he tried to discourage Washington from giving up power?” Phillips said on X, before Biden trailed off.

Vice President Kamala Harris, who endorsed Biden to replace him as the Democratic nominee, said in her first speech Monday that Biden’s “legacy of accomplishments over the past three years is unparalleled in modern history.”

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz called Biden an “American hero” — just weeks after saying Democratic governors “supported him.”

Republicans have responded to Democrats’ attempts to make Biden a hero after their pressure campaign.

“This idea that the media is trying to spread that (Biden) is like George Washington, turning down power for the good of the country — he had no choice! They stabbed him in the back!” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Monday of Jesse Watters. “The New York Times went after him, the big donors went after him.”

GOP candidate Donald Trump said: “I can’t believe it! They’re making a ‘hero’ out of Crooked Joe Biden, the worst president in the history of the United States — he was pushed out of power like a dog, and look what the radical left can do.”

Other leading Republicans reminded voters that if Biden is voted out, the Democratic National Convention delegates will decide the nominee, not the voters.

Trump’s vice presidential nominee, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), called Harris a “threat to democracy” because she will likely be selected as the nominee without voters having a say in the matter.

“We need to be clear about exactly what happened here … more than 48 hours ago, just over 100 days before the election, the Democratic Party bosses took Joe Biden off the ballot,” House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) told reporters Tuesday.

Harris has not yet faced any Democratic challengers to her candidacy and will likely receive enough delegates to clinch the Democratic nomination, despite Biden already winning the votes in the primaries.
