Gli UNTO ANDERS saranno in italy on 13 ago the phenomenon of Fontaneto D’Agogna (NO) in the company Behemoth and Imperial Triumphant.

When writing for the record began, Gabriel Franco & Co. of UNTO OTHERS were reeling from two years of post-pandemic touring and personal hell. They not only survived, they came back stronger and more determined than ever. “My goal was to push this thing so hard that more people would know us as UNTO OTHERS,” Franco says, referring to the band’s name change from Idle Hands. But hard work came with a price: “At the end of it, I was burned out, full of anxiety, and raw nerves,” Franco says. That unspeakable pressure led to what became the foundation for Never, Neverland. Signing with Century Media and enlisting British producer Tom Dalgety (Ghost, The Cult), what started as a glorification of exhaustion blossomed into the band’s most diverse and fulfilling work to date.

Never, Neverland is equally dreamy, but never loses the energy and darkness of UNTO OTHERS. It’s a record that owes as much to The Cure as it does to self-proclaimed influences like The Sisters of Mercy and Iron Maiden. Simply put, this is the record where UNTO OTHERS prove they’re so much more than a one-trick, blackened steed, but instead a band on the edge of something terrible and utterly timeless.

Never, Neverland also marks a new era for UNTO OTHERS (rounded out by guitarist Sebastian Silva, bassist Brandon Hill, and drummer Colin Vranizan). Emerging in 2017, the band gained attention with the EP Don’t Waste Your Time, followed by 2019’s beloved full-length Mana and 2021’s heavyweight LP Strength. Now, UNTO OTHERS build upon the seductive, beguiling foundation they’ve carved out of a boulder of goth, classic rock, punk, black metal, and heavy metal.

“Mana and Strength are almost one,” Franco reflects on how Never, Neverland differs from its predecessors. “I had an iron grip on those albums. Every beat had to be where I wanted it to be and how I wanted it to sound. With this one, I took a much looser approach and gave the band members a lot more input. This is the first record where Brandon does backing vocals instead of me. Even though I still wrote the core of the songs, this is a much more collaborative effort. I kind of let go because I realized it was killing me. And the record is better for it. It’s the best thing we’ve ever done.”

Bringing in producer Tom Dalgety for Never, Neverland was a welcome change for Franco and his crew. The results of a month spent at Portland’s Falcon Studios (where they recorded Mana ) with Dalgety majestically deliver the dark promise of UNTO OTHERS: guitars swell and pound with color and shape, while a newfound confidence and dimension creeps into Gabe’s vocals. Never, Neverland weaves its own spell, cementing UNTO OTHERS as the reflectively-stained face of goth today.

Whether they’re opening for extreme metal legends like Carcass, Arch Enemy or Behemoth or packing out sweaty venues with traditional metal acts like Haunt or Eternal Champion, Franco & Company never fail to captivate even the most unlikely and diverse audiences with their incendiary shadow play. Like their best sources of inspiration, UNTO OTHERS aren’t content to simply plumb dark musical sanctuaries and narrow subgenres – Gabe’s sights are set on something bigger.
