Dramatic video shows whale capsizing boat off New Hampshire coast

Two boaters have died off the coast of New Hampshire after a whale jumped from their boat and capsized, a dramatic scene captured on video, the U.S. Coast Guard said Tuesday.

The boat’s owners, who were effectively flung into the Atlantic Ocean after the giant mammal struck and crashed into the 23-foot-long vessel, were rescued by good Samaritans, the Coast Guard reported in a series of posts on X.

The incident occurred near Odiorne Point State Park in Rye, New Hampshire, the ranger said.

Video shows the whale breaching the water and hitting the back of the boat. At least one of the boaters can be seen jumping into the water.

Colin Yager, who shot the video, told NBC News on Tuesday that after the whale jumped out of the water, he and his brother picked up the boaters who had been thrown into the ocean.

According to the Coast Guard, there were no injuries.

“We are grateful to the Good Samaritans for taking such quick action to rescue these two individuals. Bravo Zulu!” said the guard.

The coastguard crew from Station Portsmouth reported the whale appeared unharmed, the guard said. The boat was recovered, he added.
