DOC rangers and community group Owhango Alive were joined by Ruapehu District Mayor Weston Kirton to celebrate the reopening of the track.

DOC Tongariro Operations Manager George Taylor says the slide that blocked the railway line is now safe again.

“The DOC team has worked hard to make these improvements for the community that loves this place.”

Owhango Alive spokesperson Marion Johnston says despite the wet and muddy conditions at the opening event, everyone was happy to celebrate the work done.

“We even stopped for a moment to admire some whio on the river – clearly they were giving their blessing to the day!”

The opening of the circuit was marked by a karakia and short speeches, followed by a ceremonial ribbon cutting ceremony featuring Beau Bryan from Owhango Primary School, along with Mayor Weston, Colleen Boston from Owhango Alive and George Taylor.

After the rainy ceremony, attendees enjoyed a hot drink and kai in the wonderfully dry pavilion at Owhango Domain.

The Ohinetonga Track is popular with both locals and tourists, taking walkers through forest and past idyllic spots along the Whakapapa River.

“Hikers can once again enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the Whakapapa River in the Tongariro Forest Conservation Area,” Marion said.

To reach Ohinetonga Track, take the State Highway 4 turnoff at the ‘Walking tracks’ sign in Owhango.
