My order: This Springfield-based donut legend has five locations, but we chose the Yucan Drive store because it’s the only one to offer the Donut Sundae, made with ice cream from Greenville’s Rolling Lawns Dairy. They also offer milkshakes. The sundae concoction included a choice of donut, two scoops of ice cream (several flavors available) and a variety of toppings. We opted for the cake donut, butter pecan and chocolate chip ice cream with caramel and chocolate syrup and Mel-O-Cream donut cream ($6.99). We decided to grab lunch before indulging in this sweet treat, so we ordered the Lunch Box specials ($9.99) which included a sandwich, choice of chips, drink and donut. I ordered a ham and cheese sandwich on a Bismarck donut base. My companion ordered the turkey and cheese on Italian bread. Both sandwiches were prepared panini-style. The donuts went home to be eaten another time.

I like this: For me, it’s hard to beat a Mel-O-Cream donut. A fresh batch of donuts had just been delivered to the store. The Bismark sandwich donut base makes for an interesting contrast between sweet and savory. We both enjoyed the soft, creamy ice cream.

Dislikes: Not really a dislike, but next time I’ll leave out the Bismark crust so I can enjoy the airiness of the bread.

What should I order next time? I would try one of the breakfast sandwich options, Egg and Cheese with Bacon or Sausage, on a Bismark or English muffin ($3.99) or my favorite, Lemon Honeymoon donut.
