PARIS (AP) — Salt Lake City will once again host the Olympic Games after the International Olympic Committee formally awarded the 2034 Winter Olympics to the United States on Wednesday.

Utah’s capital had been the only candidate since the International Olympic Committee gave Salt Lake City exclusive negotiating rights last year in the process that was fast-tracked to 2034 and resulted in the United States being awarded the Games.

The campaign team that presented the bid on stage to IOC members included Utah Governor Spencer Cox, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall and alpine skiing legend Lindsey Vonn. Back home, a public viewing party gathered at 3 a.m. to watch a broadcast from Paris.

Salt Lake City’s final approval after a vote by these members means the Winter Games will be held again 32 years after they were first held in 2002.
