Iberville Parish Property Taxes Reach New Record High

The 2023 property tax amounts mark another record year for Iberville Parish.

The final tally will likely be $124.5 million, Assessor Randy Sexton said. The total is $9.5 million more than last year’s figure, which was a record.

Shintech was the largest tax-paying entity in the parish, with a total tax amount of $24 million.

The parish’s total property taxes last year are well below the $42 million Sexton received when he took office in 2009.

“I was surprised because we had such a big increase from last year,” he said. “We’ve had a reassessment year, which hasn’t changed our values all that much… this is all new.

“Shintech is without a doubt the biggest driving force. Shintech is a very big player in this game — the biggest, by far, and the amount of money they are spending on these factories is unbelievable.”

Sexton believes Iberville’s stable, business-friendly government attracts large industrial companies, which bring millions in additional revenue to the parish.

There is another factor that plays a role in the equation.

“Other parishes are running out of land,” he said. “It’s all about deepwater access along the Mississippi River, south of Baton Rouge.

“These companies need access to deep water and availability of land, and what we have here is what they end up getting. Whether a factory owns it or a neighbor is storing it in case they need to expand, I don’t blame them at all.”

The industrial tax exemption is a “blessing” for Iberville parish, he said.

Even after Gov. John Bel Edwards cut ITEP from 100 percent to 75 percent in 2018, revenues for Iberville Parish remain solid, Sexton said.

“We shouldn’t have to go to the state and beg for money — Iberville certainly won’t do that,” he said.
