MA State Police Officers Investigated – NBC Boston

Weeks after Karen Read’s trial ended, the fallout continues as two other Massachusetts State Police officers who testified are the subject of an internal investigation.

The internal investigation is likely based on testimony during the Karen Read trial, where lead investigator Michael Proctor took the stand and testified about derogatory text messages he sent to other officers about Read.

Those texts led to a suspension without pay.

Now, two of Proctor’s supervisors, Sgt. Yuri Bukhenik and Det. Lt. Brian Tully, are the subject of an ongoing internal investigation. Both are currently still at full strength.

State police would not provide details, but Proctor admitted in court that Bukhenik was part of the texting group and was also identified in court as one of its supervisors.

Tully is one of the supervisors of the Norfolk District Attorney’s Office’s Criminal Investigation Unit.
Michael Coyne, legal analyst for NBC10 Boston, said these investigations make the already difficult process of reviewing the lawsuit even more difficult for the Commonwealth.

“I think this case has exposed a lot of deficiencies within law enforcement that now that they’ve been exposed, the Mass. State Police have no choice but to investigate further and make sure that at the end of the day, they’ve fixed whatever problems there were within their ranks and that those same problems don’t happen again in the future,” Coyne said.

A third officer, Lt. John Fanning, was investigated, but state police said the charges against him were unfounded.
