13 Warning Traffic: FM-1097 reduced to 1 lane over Atkins Creek in Montgomery County after heavy rains washed out the road

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — If you often drive FM 1097, just east of the city of Montgomery, beware! A portion of the road over Atkins Creek was washed out during Tuesday’s heavy rains.

At this time, only one lane is available.

Montgomery County Judge Mark Keough shared photos of the damage on social media. A portion of the road appears to have fallen into the creek below, causing the guardrail to buckle.

Keough said TxDOT is working on repairs and drivers should expect significant delays in the region.

He said he expects to have an update on the timeline and expectations Wednesday morning.

The road damage comes as more rain is expected in southeast Texas on Wednesday and Thursday.

The ABC13 weather team has declared Thursday an ABC13 Weather Alert Day. More tropical downpours are on the way and the risk of flash flooding now appears to be even higher for Thursday as low pressure systems move through Southeast Texas to intensify and extend the heavy rains.
